As a savvy boomer you’re probably doing your due diligence asking yourself if you plan to retire or reinvent. A boomer is not an old person who is near death. Boomers are vibrant, alive, and active and often want more out of life and truly examine deep needs before making a choice. If you choose to start a business it’s important to figure out what you want from that business so that you can choose correctly. There are key question to ask yourself when making the choice to retire or reinvent.

What are your financial goals? — Setting financial goals is a way to determine if you already have met those goals or if you need more working years to reach them. Sit down and write down your goals in regard to finances, and then move on to the next questions to help you reach them.

What are your interests? — Sometimes starting a business is more about what your interests are. Many people don’t really want to retire, that is not something that is exciting to them. Instead, they are excited by doing something new and interesting and starting a business is one of them. Do your current interests lend themselves to a business? What do you like to do now that can become a business?

What is your work style? — Do you like working on the clock, 8 to 6, or do you prefer a more eclectic style of working? Do you like to work late into the night, or early in the morning? Do you like working directly, face-to-face with others or would working remotely be more your style?

What are your skills? — What skills do you possess now that would help you realize your dream of business ownership? Can you learn new skills? Should you learn new skills or can you use the ones you already have to parlay into a business?

Where do you plan to live? — When you start your business will you live where you do now or did you have other plans after retirement from your other job? Will your business ideas translate to the new location? Is there high speed Internet and infrastructure available so that you can work remotely if you want?

What type of work do you want to do? — Deep down you know your dream job and your dream business, what is it? Identify it by just answering with what comes to your mind first? If nothing comes to mind go look on the net at what others are doing and see if any of those ideas gel with your situation.

Do you want to work full-time or part time? – Maybe you want to retire partially and only run your new business part time. Do your ideas lend themselves to working part time. Are you able to turn down work so that you remain part time? Can you find a group of people to outsource overflow to so that you become a manager of your new business instead of a slave to it? Or, do you love working as much as possible?

The great thing about reinventing your life after retirement is that it’s totally up to you to design the kind of work life after retirement that you desire. What works for you? What do you want? It’s at your fingertips, you only have to grab it.

In business you have strategies which comprise goals, tactics and metrics. If you keep these ideas straight when you’re barnstorming plans for your business you’ll go far in achieving great success. The steps are:

Create a goal – A good goal is one that you can name, and achieve. Goals should be both achievable and realistic but also challenging. It should also be specific. “Increase newsletter sign ups by 80% in 30 days.” From that you can get an actual number.

Craft tactics – Once you know your specific goal, then you can develop tactics, and tasks to reach that goal. Such as: “I will run a PPC campaign for 15 days”. With that tactic you’ll have many tasks to accomplish such as: creating the sales page, creating the advertisement, choosing the keywords, setting up your newsletter and so forth.

Accomplish tasks – Tasks come from the tactics you choose. Schedule tasks each day with your goals in mind using the tactics you decided upon. You have 30 days to accomplish your goal, so on day one you will create a sales page, day two you will create the advertisement, day three you’ll send out some tweets and blogs, day four you’ll decide upon keywords based on keyword research, and so on, until finally you’re running the PPC campaign.

Evaluate Metrics — For instance let’s assume you have 30 newsletter subscribers when you start. This means that you must increase your newsletter subscribers to 54 (30 * .08 + 30 = 54 -30 = 24) in 30 days. This means that you need to get almost one new subscriber each day of your campaign. If the tactics you’re using aren’t achieving that, then you need to adjust.

Repeat — If something works, do it again, and again. No need to recreate the wheel when it works. If you choose to change something change only one small piece at a time and give time to see the results of your efforts.

Many marketers run two different campaigns at a time with two different sales pages that are only slightly different to see which words, colors, and style works best. This can work for you too, and it is a good way to test and evaluate if your work is effective or not. So let’s repeat here the steps:

Create a goal

Craft tactics

Accomplish tasks

Evaluate metrics

Repeat

As you can see, breaking things down to steps and scheduling each day to achieve each step will eventually lead you to achieving your goals. Keeping track of the results of each task will further encourage you to keep going, or to change tactics.

Does your productivity ever get hindered by your desire to be perfect? As you seek the easiest or fastest route to your goal, you may find yourself stopped entirely. Sometimes you may even do this on purpose, to keep from having to make a decision.

However, there’s a work-around. Maybe you’ve heard of the term, “heuristic.” Heuristics are rules that allow a solution to be found more quickly. With a heuristic, a resolution can be found even when the entire path isn’t clear from the onset.

For example, if there were no roads, but you lived in New York and wanted to make your way to California, you might try to:

Walk west as far as you can.

Walk around any obstacle, if possible.

If faced with a mountain range, walk toward the space between 2 small peaks.

Repeat until reaching California.

Does this experiment give you the most efficient solution? No; however, it will get you where you want to go as long as you know travel west.

Try these strategies to increase your productivity:

Choose the right time. Nearly everyone has times of the day when they are most effective and times when they tend to drag. It’s smart to schedule the most critical tasks for your most effective time of the day.

Toss it. If a task doesn’t really need to be done, just get rid of it altogether.

Get the bad stuff out of the way. Do the unpleasant items quickly and as early in the day as possible.

Set a goal each day (or night). In the morning, decide what you want to accomplish that day. This can be even more effective when planned the night before. Once you have a sense of direction, you can spend all your time getting things done!

Eliminate all communication. While you’re working, turn off the phone / cell phone, and don’t check your email. Hang a sign that says, “Do not disturb,” if necessary. You don’t have to do this for all your tasks, but at least do it during the more difficult items.

Batch similar tasks together. Do all your emailing at one time. Make all your phone calls at another. Open your snail mail during a set block of time. You’ll waste less time by doing your work in this fashion.

Set a timer. Even if a task might take hours, starting will seem easier if you simply give yourself 30 minutes to get as much done as you can. A time limit seems to help many people concentrate and work better, too.

Set targets. For example, if you have to make cold-calls for your sales job, tell yourself that you’re not getting up for any reason until you’ve made at least 100 calls. Regardless of what happens, refuse to stop until you hit your target

Use the Pareto Principle. This principle states that 20% of the actions you could take will provide you with 80% of the benefits. So focus on the tasks that will accomplish the most. Unfortunately, these are frequently the tasks that are not enjoyable. You might be surprised how little you really have to do if you focus on the critical 20%.

Delegate some of your work. Is there anyone else who can help you? The people around you are resources. When appropriate, use their time and talents wisely to get things done more quickly.

Set a deadline. Having a specific endpoint will really help to focus your time and energy. If a task doesn’t feel necessary, chances are that it won’t get done.

Increase your speed. It sounds silly, but this can really help. Try doing everything a little faster. Walk faster, talk faster, type faster, and read faster.

Implement these strategies into your daily life and you’ll find yourself getting more done in less time. The ultimate secret is to stay on task and not waste any time. These rules will help you do ju

Did you know that many super successful businesses have been started during economic downturns? Hyatt, Burger King, IHOP, The Jim Henson Company, Microsoft, and even MTV was started during an economic downturn. These are very successful businesses that started on a wing and a prayer with low start up costs, even in the garage of a parent’s home, and are now recognized the world over just by their name.

Aside from these well known businesses, there have been solely owned and operated businesses owned by people just like you, who found a new and exciting way to support their families and themselves. They might not be multinational billion dollar corporations but they do quite well supporting their family and their retirement years. Contracting, consulting, and other types of ”home businesses” or entrepreneurship have exploded during this last recession just as they have during every other economic downturn we have had in our country.

Many boomers are looking to start a business with low start up costs that they can start while still working another job, or that they can start without breaking the bank while their spouse works. Either way, there are so many different ways to use your skills today that there is certainly something that you can start part time and build to a lucrative full time income over time. The trick is to look at what skills you bring to the table now, what skills you may need to learn, and how you can put that all together to come up with a business you can be proud of doing.

With the uncertainty in the economy today boomers want to minimize their financial risk by starting a business they can do from home. Having a home office is no longer considered an unprofessional thing to do. Many people are doing it, successfully, every single day. With the technology available today, and the increase of broadband access and high speed Internet which allows a sole practitioner to outsource to others who are also working from home, there isn’t much you can’t do remotely while appearing to others as a huge corporation with an entire staff at your fingertips.

Opportunities are created by changes in the marketplace, it’s to your advantage to keep your eyes open to the needs that you can fulfill based on the skills and interests you have today. If you currently work in an office as an executive secretary, or a manager, you can turn these skills into working as a consultant or virtual assistant, or even a coach to help others find their way to starting a business. There are so many ways that you can help people from your home office or kitchen table if you just start looking at what benefits you can offer others. Right now is a great time to do it because many businesses cannot afford to hire you full time, so why not work for four companies 1/4 time each? You’ll likely end up making more money than you do now, as well as feeling more fulfilled. Because, when you are the owner of your business you become the master of your fate.

This is a sad but true reality. Even sadder is that many of these businesses could have succeeded. Generally it’s not the lack of ideas that cause business failure. One of the top reason for failure starts at the beginning the inception of your business. It’s lack of vision. Without vision how do you know where you’re going or even when you’ve arrived.

To start with, goals are crucial. When we set goals, what we’re really trying to do is to bring each piece of our lives in line with our overall vision for ourselves. Using a powerful vision-setting process can help you set more effective goals, since you can chart a course that will take you toward and support your vision.

Do you have a vision for each segment of your life? Do you know where you’re headed spiritually, socially, relationally, physically, financially, and more?

Use this process to help you create a vision that works for you:

Write down your vision for a particular aspect of your life. Write a couple of paragraphs describing what you’d like to have or be. There’s no right or wrong. In fact, you probably won’t precisely articulate your dreams the very first time you try the exercise. A reasonable guess is a good place to start.

In writing your vision, avoid focusing on what you don’t want, because this will only bring about more of that. Turn your back on negativity and focus on what you do want to bring about.
For example, if you want more money: Avoid wording your statement like: “I don’t want to be poor anymore.” Instead, envision what it would be like to be rich, which is what you want, and write about what that would be like for you.
Although you may feel challenged when first learning to focus on what you want, it gets easier. Plus, the rewards are spectacular when you can do it consistently. You’ll start to notice that your life seems as if you can change it at will, which you can.

2. Visualize. Read your vision statement 2-3 times a day and imagine that aspect of your life matches your vision perfectly. How does your vision make you feel? Are you really excited and enthusiastic? Is it appealing to you on all levels? This shouldn’t take more than 60 seconds to do each time.

3. Refine. If you feel really good about your vision, that’s great. If not, now is the time to make some alterations. Continue refining the image of your dream life until doing your visualization feels spectacular. Re-write each new version.

At this point, you may be wondering when this process ever ends. Fortunately, it never ends. Your vision will forever be changing slightly throughout your life, which is good, since your desires will also change over time.

4. Review your vision daily and ensure that it continues to attract you. This will rapidly usher change into your life. In turn, these changes will demonstrate that you’re actually moving towards that vision.

Create separate vision statements for all the areas of your life. Consider your finances, relationships, adventure, health, social life, and spirituality. If you can get all these visions to look just the way you want, imagine what your life will look like!

Why Spend Time On This Process?

Consider all the things you do every day. Everything you do is either helping you reach your vision or helping someone else reach theirs. Wouldn’t reaching your goals make it a lot easier for you to help others reach their?

Creating a vision is the first step to creating the life you desire. Tweak your visions frequently and really focus on the experience of living that vision. This gets easier all the time, because imagining something enjoyable is pleasurable in itself.

Don’t hesitate; create your visions today. Then, start reviewing and improving them immediately. Your life will change rapidly for the better. You’ll then be spending your time making your own visions a reality instead of making someone else’s dream come true.

In recent decades retirement has been triggered by age, influenced by eligibility for social security benefits and employment retirement programs. Today retirement looks different, as the economy, good health and life expectancies have changed the retirement experience. In 2010, Business Insider reported that over 70 percent of those eligible for retirement can’t afford to retire and therefore stay in the workforce.

Happily, a significant number of retirement age workers are also putting off retirement because they like to work, are healthy enough to work, and feel like work plays such a significant part of their lives that they don’t want to give it up yet. Since people live longer on average than they did a few decades ago, working longer can be very beneficial to boomers and society at large.

When considering retirement it is important to reflect on what changes need to occur to move from where you are now to where you like to be in 10 years. Will keeping your current job get you where you want to be? Will starting a business help you succeed? What do you need to do to get to where you want to be and reach all your goals, personally and financially?

Many boomers have a lot of fears about retirement. Determine what your fears are. Common fears are:

Not Enough Money — The stock market has played havoc on many boomers’ retirement nest eggs. Cutbacks on savings plans at work, as well as having to contribute more to healthcare costs, less pay raises and even pay cuts have created fears about having enough money to retire. We can’t even rely on social security anymore, or so the news leads us to believe. Fear of not enough money can cause problems with your life today, as well as create a lot of fear based choices that might not be the best for you or your family.

The plan: Pay off debt before retirement. Zero debt working on a cash basis should be your goal for retirement days.

Boredom -- Many boomers worry about being bored in retirement. This is especially true for those who feel they don’t have enough money to travel and do fun leisurely things after retirement as they had planned to do. Just sitting around the house and puttering doesn’t do much for the busy boomer looking toward retirement.

The plan: Make a list of all the things you’d want to do if you didn’t have to punch a clock. Some people call it their “bucket list”, make one!

Feeling useless — It’s scary to feel useless and boomers are more cognizant of their value to society. It is the boomers who did most of the work to make this country what it is. From safety at work, to civil rights, to women’s rights, and more the boomers have been front and center on all political fronts. They’re not a generation of people who can abide feeling useless.

The plan: What can you do to avoid feelings of being useless? Volunteer someplace, start a business, help raise grandchildren? Make a plan that will keep you from these feelings.

Health Issues – The high cost of healthcare is a huge deterrent to retirement choices. You may have Medicare, and supplements, but it’s still going to be a struggle without a plan if you have any health issues that require extra services. If your income is too low to afford supplementation, that is another issue that can scare boomers from wanting to retire.

The plan: Take care of your health now. Eat right, exercise, get regular checkups, avoid long term medications if you can. Only you can do this, no doctor or medical professional can help you be healthy, the power is in your own hands.

The thing is, all these fears while fact based are very individual when you start thinking about them realistically. If you’re within 10 years of collecting social security nothing is likely to change. You can wipe that fear off your list. Same with Medicare, and other entitlements. They’ll be there for you, perhaps changed a bit but politicians aren’t going to really displace the most active voting population by destroying these safety nets.

In addition, you will never be useless, and most people who do retire report to not being bored either. In fact many retirees wonder how they had time to do all the stuff they used to do because their days are full. Of course, you are the one who must create a full schedule for yourself, nor not, depending on your needs, wants, and desires. You can do so much in retirement from starting a new business, to moving to a new country, to a complete reinvention. Only your imagination can limit you from the life of your dreams.

There is no end to the types of businesses boomers can start right from their kitchen table. But, you might have to think outside the box to get to the core of what you can offer. The best way to do this is to write down what you do now, and how you can translate that into a business for yourself. Are you a computer genius? Are you very organized? Are you a professional of some kind like a nurse, a lawyer, a CPA? Maybe you’re a secretary, or a software engineer? Any of these positions can be turned into a business from home. Even if you’re a stay at home mother, nearing or entering the empty nest time of your life, you’ve developed skills that can be translated into a business.

Technology — You’re technologically savvy and can start a business consulting others about technology. Alternatively, if you write code for software you can do this on a contract basis. If you’re up to date about all the modern conferencing software you can plan, market, organize and lead online conferences for others. Think about what you know about technology that can be transferred to working remotely from home. Also remember, you’re not forced to work from home, you can have a regular office if you want, but starting from home is a good option for saving money.

Web Business – Starting a niche website or blog can be a lucrative way to get started, but it does take longer to build up a following and start bringing in the money. This is a good way to build residual income and one that should be looked into regardless of any other business you plan to start from home. Building residual income can be a great way not to have to always rely on new clients to make money. It can take three years to see any money from this type of business, but once you experience money today for work you did yesterday you’ll be addicted.

Secretaries — If you’ve worked as a secretary, office manager, or administrative assistant for a long time you can easily translate this into working from home as a contractor as a Virtual Assistant. A Virtual Assistant (VA) is someone who works remotely for their clients in an administrative basis. Many VAs specialize in a niche such as: Graphic Design, Social Media, Web design, Wordpress Maintenance, Receptionist, Event Planning and more. With the advent in call forwarding and other remote technologies you can do almost anything someone in office can do.

Professionals – Nurses, Doctors, Lawyers, CPAs, Bookkeepers, Computer IT, Transcriptionists, and more can do their work as a consultant from home or their own office. You don’t have to have a boss. You can be the boss in any of these situations. Simply find out the laws and regulations in your area, write a business plan, identify your market, then set up a website and set up your business and before you know it you’ll be super busy. A lot of businesses and individuals have found that hiring professionals on a contract basis saves them money on benefits and supplies. But, you should make a great fee based on your role and experience when offering your skills directly to individuals.

Hobby to business — Do you have a hobby that could be turned into a business. Check out Etsy.com and see how many artists, crafts persons, and more have turned their hobby into a business. You can parlay your hobby into a business fast with all the technology available today to make getting your crafts to the public easier than ever before. Whether you make blankets, comic art, jewelry, candles, or anything under the sun the sky is the limit, only your imagination can limit you here. You’re already passionate about your hobby, so why not make it into a lucrative income to support yourself and your family in your boomer years and beyond? The whole family can get involved.

Each time you offer a new product or service it is important to ask yourself three questions to evaluate a new business idea. If you follow this three step process it will help eliminate bad business choices and clarify that additions or new ideas are worth your time and effort.

What is the significant problem does my business solve?

Many business owners often focus on what they do for their clients but this is really the wrong focus. Instead you should focus on the problem you solve. Do you offer your clients time freedom? Confidence? Yes, you DO something but what your clients actually care about is the problems that you solve for them. Figure out what that is before moving ahead. By knowing the problems you solve, and knowing what your clients or customers want, you can easily figure out whether the business endeavor is worthwhile for your target market.

How much money will I need to start my business?

Every business costs money to start. If you aren’t sure of the financials involved you cannot make good choices. Even if you do not spend much money, there other factor often left out is time. Time is money, so your own time should be calculated in terms of dollars so you know what your business really costs to get started. Consider every single factor of cost such as: Supplies, Technology, People, Services, Utilities and etc…

How much revenue will the business bring in?

What parts of your business bring in the money? How much will you need to bring in to break even? How many sales does this constitute in terms of widgets sold, or service hours provided? If you know your costs from above the formula to figure out your breakeven point (BEP) is:

Total Fixed Expenses – (X)(Y) = Zero

When your total fixed expenses minus sales(x) times price(y) equals zero at BEP. Naturally you want to make more than the BEP but the BEP is necessary to know before you start any business or add any service or product to your inventory.

If you sell a product for 20 dollars each and your BEP is $60.00 then you know that you must sell 3 products to break even. So the formula would look like this:

$60.00 = 3 x $20.00

Be realistic if you’re trading hours for dollars instead of selling a product on how many hours you can actually bill. Billable hours, and hours in the day are two different things. While you likely get paid for forty hours a week or 8 hours a day at work in your job, you won’t always get to bill for 8 hours a day if you’re working hourly.

If you sell a widget how many will you need to sell each day to break even? But if you’re working hourly, how many hours do you need to sell to break even? The best thing to do is figure out how many hours you have each day to bill, be realistic, and assign a fair number to your hourly charge so that you can figure out your BEP realistically.

Be sure to let me know how you do with this assignment.

You already have many skills that you’ve learned through life, education and work experience. Any business, just like any job requires certain basic skills to perform well. What skills do you have now? Make a list of them. Here are some skills to help you get started:

Good Writer

Experienced Public Speaker

Excellent Critical Thinker

Expert Computer Skills

Proficient Graphic Designer

Care about people

Self-Starter

Good Judgment

Organized

Handle stress well

Write a list of your own that you have learned over the years either via work, education or life experiences. All skills that you have learned no matter how you learned them are valuable skills to include. If you’ve learned budgeting via being a housewife and mother, then you have executive level budgeting skills. Write it down! Remember that starting your own business means that you will be the boss so you need to exaggerate or try to impress anyone by writing down skills. Write down the actual skills and knowledge that you have.

Now, write a list of skills that you need to run the business that you’ve decided upon. If you are missing something important such as the ability to organize, work under stress, delegate responsibility then you will need to learn it. But what if you are lacking something more necessary such as you want to have a business designing graphics but you lack the graphic design skills? Write down the skill needed and then write down what you are going to do about your lacking skill. Can you learn it? Can you outsource it? What are the steps needed to overcome this obstacle?

Outside of specific skills for the type of business you want to start there are some general skills that you need to have or develop to have your own business such as:

Financial Knowledge – It’s important to understand the basics about bookkeeping. You can use a program such as QuickBooks, or Outright.com along with invoicing software such as Freshbooks.com, but you still need to understand about the financials of owning a business. I recommend the book: Small Business Taxes Made Easy, Second Edition by Eva Rosenberg. Follow her advice and you’ll be set.

Self-Motivation — When you have your own business you’ve got to be self-motivated. No one is going to tell you what time to get up in the morning, what to do each day. You are going to need to have the ability to motivate yourself to do things that you normally dread doing. No matter what business you choose there are always going to be tasks to accomplish that aren’t your favorite. You’ve got to have what it takes to do them.

Time-Management – No one is going to tell you to stop playing around on FaceBook.com, or to stop watching TV or even to stop texting at work. You’re on your own as to how you use your time and without excellent time management skills you will get off track. Not everyone is born with this skill but it can be learned and developed. Keeping a good schedule on a calendar is important but once you make a schedule you’ve got to follow it.

There are many factors that go into deciding what business is the right one for you to start. Choosing a business requires you to decide upon many different aspects. Such as, your skills, talent and training, your experience, your needs, your desires, and the lifestyle you want to live. Yes, choosing the right business for you also has to do with lifestyle design, because what is the point of having a business if you find out later that you can’t live the type of life that you want to live?

Analyze Yourself

•	What makes you happy? Are you happy with being challenged, can you deal with a little stress? Do you prefer the comfort of having a weekly paycheck or can you deal with the ups and downs (and rewards) of owning your own business where floods and droughts are common place?
•	What are your goals? It is important to know what your ultimate goal is. Is your ultimate goal to move up in the company you now work for, or is your ultimate goal to own your own company, to earn X amount of dollars and employ X amount of people, and to get to take X amount of vacations per year?
•	Identify the steps. Be very specific, write down personal, business and financial goals. Include the steps for each that will be required to get you where you want to go. Without identifiable actions on your part it will be hard to get where you want to go, so do not ignore this important aspect of planning your business and finding out what you want to do.

Brainstorm Business Ideas

What are some needs that you have that you can’t fill such as a service you need personally that you cannot find.

Do you have a hobby that you can turn into a business?

What type of business can you start based on your experience, talent and training?

Consider a good mix of business between those serving consumers and those serving other businesses. Also consider businesses traditionally appealing to men and those traditionally appealing to women.

Here are a few businesses that have a good chance of success:

•	Event Planner
•	Financial Planner
•	Freelance writer
•	Marketing consultant
•	Website designer
•	Massage therapist

Even if you figure out that you need new training to start the business of your dreams — that is okay. You can obtain the training necessary to make all your ideas a reality. The important part is to identify what business you want to start, note whether or not it aligns with your values, and then decide what training you need to fill the holes, then take the steps necessarily to move forward. The secret to knowing which business is best for you is already in you, the real secret is to make the decision and then stick to it.

Do you have a business that you’ve been dreaming about that’s just right for you? So hit reply and be sure to share your ideas.
